The newly-upgraded accident and emergency department at the Pingelly District Hospital was officially opened by Health Minister Peter Foss today, at the start of a four-day tour of the Great Southern Region.

The $180,000 project further represents the State Government's commitment to upgrading rural health services throughout the State.

"As everyone living in country areas appreciates, accident and emergency services are an integral part of an effective health service," Mr Foss said.

"It is an enormous comfort to local people to know that facilities like the Pingelly Hospital are within their reach, should the need arise.

"This investment in the local hospital will improve the efficiency of the accident and emergency service and provide peace of mind for people living in Pingelly and surrounding areas."

Mr Foss praised the efforts of the hospital's board of management and the Pingelly community in supporting the local hospital.

"Small rural hospitals rely on the enthusiastic support of local communities if they are to remain relevant and viable," he said.

"I believe that the kind of support this hospital receives from the residents of Pingelly is a fine example for all communities to emulate."

While in the region, Mr Foss will visit Narrogin, Wagin, Dumbleyung, Lake Grace, Katanning, Kojonup, Tambellup, Mt Barker, and Albany.
