Transport Minister Eric Charlton today opened the newly-upgraded tourist access route into the Nanga Bay Resort.

The 2.6-kilometre road, connecting the resort facility to Denham Road, was upgraded and sealed at a cost of $300,000.

Mr Charlton said $240,000 was provided by the Government through Main Roads and $60,000 by the Shire of Shark Bay.

The shire carried out the works, which were identified as a high priority in the Gascoyne Regional Road Strategy.

An additional $20,000 would be provided through the Gascoyne Regional Road Group to upgrade and improve safety at a right-hand bend in the road near the resort entrance.

"The road has been widened to 6.5 metres, making it much safer for traffic to negotiate," Mr Charlton said.

"In its previous form, the road was often dangerous, particularly after light rainfall which made the surface slippery."

Mr Charlton said that in recent years, other road improvements in the Shark Bay area had improved safety and tourist access to the region.

These included sealing 12 kilometres of road into Coral Bay and 24 kilometres leading to Monkey Mia.
