23/10/97
Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today praised Paul McNamee and the success he has had with the Hopman Cup.
Mr Moore said that in the 10 years since the world-class mixed doubles format was launched, the Hopman Cup had become one of Western Australia's most popular annual events.
It also had become an integral part of international tennis.
"It says a lot for the esteem in which Paul is held by the players on the world professional circuit that he is able to attract them to this tournament year after year," Mr Moore said.
"I am also proud to say that the support of the Western Australian corporate community, as well as the people of this State, has ensured its success."
Mr Moore said that Eventscorp, too, had played a significant role in the success of the Hopman Cup.
"Western Australians have been loyal to the Hopman Cup - and the Hopman Cup has been very beneficial to us in return," he said.
"Apart from giving us the chance to watch the world's best tennis players, it has been an enormous boost to WA's profile.
"There are 42 hours of international television coverage seen by millions of people round the world.
"That level of exposure just cannot be bought.
"This does not just generate tourism dollars for us. It also indirectly increases awareness of our State in areas of trade and commerce."
