Tourism Minister Doug Shave tonight announced that Pemberton had won the Golden West Network Top Tourism Town award for 1993.

Mr Shave said the award was the most sought after regional tourism accolade in Western Australia.

The announcement of the $30,000 prize to be spent on a tourism development was announced during a presentation function held at Hannan's North Gold Mine in Kalgoorlie.

A total of 23 towns entered this year's competition, demonstrating the importance of tourism to regional communities throughout the State.

Special commendations were also made to New Norcia for the development of tourism to help sustain a unique culture and heritage, and to Coolgardie for the development of its individuality as a tourism town through planning and restoration of its historic environment.

"The GWN Top Tourism Town competition has become the most important regional tourism competition because it recognises that a town does not have to be big or receive the most number of tourists to be a success at tourism," Mr Shave said.

"The award recognises excellence in the way a regional centre presents itself to visitors and the extent to which the townsfolk support the tourism industry."

Pemberton would spend its prize money on the construction of stage three of the Karri Interpretation Centre.

Broome, Kununurra and Denmark have won the three previous GWN Top Tourism Town awards.
