Transport Minister Eric Charlton wants everyone who can to leave their car at home on Friday and start Bikeweek 97 by riding to work.

Mr Charlton will join more than 1,000 cyclists at a free breakfast for bike riders at Forrest Place.

"Cycling is an important part of transportation for many Western Australians, either as a way to get from A to B, as a sport or for sheer enjoyment," he said.

"On Friday morning, anyone who comes to Forrest Place between 6.30 am and 9 am can have a free, healthy breakfast to kick off Bikeweek 97."

As well as the free breakfast, there will be entertainment by a three-piece jazz band, bicycle-related giveaways and spot prizes.

Bikeweek 97, from March 14 to 23, will involve thousands of riders in more than 25 events across the State.

Bikeweek co-ordinator Jim Krynen said cycling made sense.

"Riding to work cuts pollution, can halve your risk of heart disease and saves on parking fees," he said.

"Today there will be 200,000 bike trips made in Perth and half a million Western Australians are expected to turn their pedals at some time during the week."

Bikeweek 97 is co-ordinated by the Department of Transport's Bikewest unit.
