Permanent moorings to be built at King George Sound dive sites (Albany)
15/3/96
Permanent moorings at dive sites in Albany's King George Sound will be built under the FISHCARE WA program.
Fisheries Minister Monty House today announced the Albany Maritime Heritage Association had received a $2,500 FISHCARE WA grant to build five moorings.
FISHCARE WA provided grants of up to $3,000 to enable members of the community to undertake projects that would benefit the aquatic environment and fish stocks.
The moorings would be placed at different sites and various depths to reduce the environmental damage caused by vessels anchoring on fragile reefs.
Mr House said the project had widespread community support from divers, recreational fishermen, the Town of Albany and local businesses and organisations.
The project was also supported by the Great Southern Recreational Fishing Regional Liaison Committee.
"I congratulate the association on their efforts to protect the local aquatic environment," the Minister said.
"This is an example of how FISHCARE WA grants will help ensure the long-term sustainability of fish stocks, the protection of their environment and maximise the public benefits of fish resources.
"FISHCARE WA provides an innovative opportunity for community involvement and will help raise awareness that each of us can contribute to the protection and enhancement of vital aquatic resources for the enjoyment of current and future generations."
Mr House said that applications for funding under FISHCARE WA were invited from all members of the community and encouraged potential applicants to discuss their project ideas with the Regional Liaison Committee or FISHCARE WA Project Manager Jeff Camkin on (09) 481 2044.
