Perth to host 1997 Aerobic World Championships
April 10, 1996
Perth has won the right to host the 1997 Aerobic World Championships, Tourism Minister Norman Moore announced today.
Enitled 'Aerobica', the event will include an aerobics and gymnastics convention and a Health and Lifestyle Expo at the Burswood Dome from May 29 to June 1 next year.
Mr Moore said organisers expected up to 50 countries to participate in the championships which would decide the individual male, individual female, mixed pairs and trios world champions.
"The international standard aerobic and gymnastics convention is expected to attract 500 international instructors and organisers predict the economic impact of the event will be $3.3 million," he said.
The bid for the event was made by the Western Australian Competitive Aerobic Federation and the Australian Gymnastics Federation, with support from the State Government's major events agency, Eventscorp.
Mr Moore said that the successful bid was a reflection of the hard work of the organisers and Perth's growing international status as a venue for major international sporting events.
"The Aerobica FIG World Championships are part of a stable of events that will make 1997 a year like no other with more than 10 major events taking place almost back-to-back in Perth," said Mr Moore.
"Dubbed Year of the Event, 1997 will have annual events such as Rally Australia, the Hopman Cup and the Heineken Golf Classic, and Olympics sport events such as the Track Cycling World Championships and the Triathlon World Championships.
"Add the Aerobics World Championships and the Whitbread Round-The-World Race on top of the prestigious 1998 World Swimming Championships, and Western Australia is set to reap the multitude of sporting and economic rewards such events deliver."
