Premier Richard Court has welcomed the news that Perth has won the right to host the 10th Women's Hockey World Cup in 2002.
Mr Court said the decision confirmed Western Australia's reputation as a centre for excellence in women's hockey - with the AIS women's hockey program already based in Perth.
The decision was announced last night in Belgium by the sport's governing body, the Federation Internationale de Hockey.
"This is great news for Western Australia and adds to the State's reputation as an excellent venue for world class sporting events," Mr Court said.
"Western Australia has shown through events such as the World Swimming Championships, the World Cycling Championships and the Hopman Cup that it has the facilities and the expertise to host major events.
"The economic benefits for the State will be substantial. Sixteen teams will compete and with the proximity to Western Australia of other hockey playing nations there is likely to be a huge boost in visitor numbers during the tournament.
"There will also be enormous exposure to key tourism markets through television coverage of the event.
"Western Australia's love of hockey makes it a natural venue for the tournament and I am delighted that the bid has been successful.
"The State has invested in top class facilities for hockey in Western Australia and securing such a prestigious event is a reward for that foresight," Mr Court said.
The Ministry of Sport and Recreation supported the bid which was strongly backed by Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore.
