Perth businessman Peter Solomon has been appointed chairman of the East Perth Redevelopment Authority.

Planning Minister Richard Lewis said State Cabinet had endorsed Mr Solomon's appointment to the seven-member board which oversees the multi-million dollar urban renewal project.

Mr Solomon will take up his position after retiring as managing director of Estates Development Company on November 22.

He will replace Mr Bill Griffiths, who has decided not to continue as chairman because of other work commitments.

Mr Lewis said Mr Solomon, 61, had vast experience in the land development industry in both the public and private sector.

Mr Solomon is a former state manager and a director of L J Hooker in Perth, a past Federal and State president of the Urban Development Institute of Australia, a former WA chairman of the Australian Institute of Urban Studies and is a current member of the board of LandCorp.

"Mr Solomon's experience will ensure that the redevelopment of East Perth will continue as an outstanding example of urban renewal to the rest of the country," Mr Lewis said.

"He will be joining the board of East Perth during a period of intense activity which will see more than $30 million spent this financial year."

Mr Lewis said that money would be spent on the continuing clean-up of the area, the connection of power and water supplies, landscaping and the creation of new public recreation areas along the East Perth foreshore.

"Major projects, such as the first stage of the Claisebrook Inlet and a major residential sub-division, will also get underway this financial year," he said.

"The Claisebrook Inlet is the heart of the East Perth redevelopment and once completed its network of pedestrian walkways will eventually link the Swan River with Northbridge.

"The new residential sub-division in the Constitution Hill precinct, near Trafalgar Road, will provide more than 100 homes within walking distance of the city."
