Plans to build $40M cement plant at Kwinana announced
29/6/95
Kwinana will soon boast a new industry, following plans announced today to build a $40 million cement plant.
Resources Development Minister Colin Barnett today welcomed the decision by Swan Portland Cement to begin construction of a clinker grinding plant in the Kwinana industrial area.
The Minister said the company expected to begin construction of the plant later this year, subject to all Government approvals. Construction is expected to create up to 100 local jobs.
The plant is expected to produce up to 400,000 tonnes of blended bulk and bagged cement for the Western Australian market each year.
The Minister said the plant would join a series of new capital projects for the area, including Alcoa's alumina hydrate plant; a new ammonium nitrate and nitric acid plant for CSBP and Farmers; an expansion to Australian Gold Reagents' sodium cyanide manufacturing plant; a new lime kiln for Cockburn Cement; the Mission Energy cogeneration project at BP's oil refinery and upgrades to the BP refinery complex.
The Swan Portland Cement plant is the first phase of a proposed cement and lime manufacturing facility to be built at the Kwinana site, subject to planning approvals.
It will eventually replace the company's long-established cement works at Rivervale.
