Poll on amalgamation of Northam Shire & Town to be held in Feb 1999

A poll will be held in the Shire of Northam on February 20 next year to determine whether the shire will amalgamate with the Town of Northam to form a new local government.

After receiving a petition signed by 464 electors, Local Government Minister Paul Omodei agreed to the shire council's request for an in-person poll rather than a postal ballot on February 20.

Mr Omodei has told the council that the Local Government Advisory Board will determine the precise question to be used on the ballot paper and it will also prepare the summary of the cases for and against the question.

He said he would inform the council of further details as soon as the board had completed its work.
