Preferred developer for Gantheaume Point tourism project announced
11/8/99
Lands Minister Doug Shave has announced the preferred developer of an integrated tourism project for Gantheaume Point in Broome.
"Cabinet accepted a recommendation that Pearl Bay Resort Developments be the preferred developer for this important project," Mr Shave said.
He said the proposed Gantheaume Point development would be on a site between Cable and Riddell Beaches and would include a range of accommodation types.
The site was identified for an integrated tourism development in the Broome Planning Strategy of 1993 which was drawn up after extensive consultation with the Broome community.
"I have written to the Broome Shire Council and Aboriginal and community representatives about Cabinet's decision," Mr Shave said.
"I hope to visit Broome soon for further talks and to outline the requirement for an extensive community consultation process which will be a condition of approval for the project."
A Memorandum of Understanding between the State Government and Pearl Bay Resort Developments was being prepared. It would cover key environmental and cultural issues, and community consultation and information programs.
The memorandum would also provide financial security for the first phase by requiring the preferred developer to provide a $10 million performance bond.
"The first phase of the project will involve a due diligence study and detailed design work. In addition to Aboriginal and environmental issues, it will examine options for the relocation of the racecourse," Mr Shave said.
"One of the conditions for the sale of land to allow the preferred developer to proceed will be the implementation of an extensive and effective community consultation process."
