Premier Richard Court travelled to Denmark today to personally congratulate the town for winning the 1998 Keep Australia Beautiful Council's National Tidy Town Award.

Mr Court, accompanied by Local Government Minister Paul Omodei and local member and Primary Industry Minister Monty House, said the award was a considerable achievement for the small community of Denmark and each resident should be very proud of gaining national recognition of this kind.

"To win the national title requires exceptional community participation and spirit, and these are evident in Denmark which has won the State tidy town award for the last three years," the Premier said.

More than 2,000 communities around Australia participate in the Keep Australia Beautiful Council's Tidy Towns competition each year.

Mr Court acknowledged the strong commitment of the Denmark Tidy Towns Committee and said the group had played an integral part in the town's success in the awards.

"It's dedicated Western Australians such as these, who constantly give so much of their own time to improve the community in which they live, that make the tidy towns program so successful," the Premier said.

The Denmark Tidy Towns Committee worked closely with the shire council, the Chamber of Commerce, local schools and more than 40 community groups within the shire to ensure maximum community participation in the town's bid to win the award.

"Without a cooperative community effort involving every sector of the local community it would not have been possible for Denmark to become Australia's tidiest town," the Premier said.

"By working together the residents of Denmark have won national recognition which is sure to have many ongoing benefits for the town."
