Preparations are well under way for the first major event of the central branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society.

The club is holding its inaugural camp draft and gymkhana at Boddington on November 25 and 26.

Part of the cost of staging the event is being offset by a grant of $1,000 from the State Government.

Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore said the club expected about 200 participants in the two-day event, which would include camp drafting, a working event and a novelty event.

Mr Moore said the event would also help the club press its claims to hold next year's State championships at Boddington.  It was also hoping to get some of its members over to next year's national championships which would be held in Tamworth, New South Wales.

Camp drafting is an arduous task for horse and rider.  The rider has to select a cow from a herd, cut it from the rest and work it around a clover-shaped course.
