Proposals to expand parkland areas in Perth's NW Corridor
March 18, 1996
Planning Minister Richard Lewis has outlined proposals to expand a number of parkland areas in Perth's North-West Corridor.
Mr Lewis said the rezoning proposals were part of the North West Corridor Omnibus Amendment No 2, which had been released for public comment.
"If supported by the community, a section of the Maylands foreshore adjoining Bardon Park will be reserved for parks and recreation for the first time, and a significant area in the City of Wanneroo will become parkland," he said.
"Other proposals will see a green buffer area preserved around a Mirrabooka industrial site and a number of road reserves in the northern suburbs will be downgraded."
The Minister said the amendment's 17 proposals affected various parts of the Cities of Wanneroo and Stirling and the Shire of Swan.
"The proposal to rezone 10.4 hectares on the Maylands foreshore from urban to parks and recreation recognises the regional significance of Bardon Park," Mr Lewis said.
"The area contains freshwater springs which are essential to maintain the freshwater ecology of the wetlands.
"As well as being environmentally sensitive, the foreshore has significance in relation to European settlement and Aboriginal history.
"The proposed reclassification includes some privately owned properties, including St Anne's Hospital."
Mr Lewis said the amendment outlined plans to rezone 220 hectares on the corner of Wanneroo Road and Burns Beach Road from rural to parks and recreation.
"This will be another significant step in creating a continuous green corridor between Lake Goollelal and Yanchep National Park," he said.
"Other rezoning proposals included in the document will create parks and recreation reservations on almost 30 hectares in Sydney Road, Gnangara, and 16 hectares in Landsdale."
The Minister said the Coalition Government had reserved more than 16,000 hectares of land in the metropolitan area for parks and recreation, which had increased by 43 per cent the amount of land zoned for recreational purposes.
In Mirrabooka, the existing Atlas Brick site on Alexander Drive was proposed to be rezoned industrial.
"The proposal allows for a buffer between the brickworks and residential areas and ensures the retention of a green link between areas of regional open space," Mr Lewis said.
Comments on the amendment proposals will be accepted over the next three months.
