A State Government review of speedway racing safety is seeking public input.

Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore said today the Speedway Review Committee wanted submissions from interested people as part of its research.

The committee was established in 1992 by the previous Government and had surveyed site, spectator and driver safety at tracks and clubs throughout the State.  Legislation covering speedway racing was also being reviewed.

Mr Moore said public comment was being sought on issues such as safety standards, track inspections, insurance levels and the organisation of motor racing events.

The decision to call for public input was made prior to the December 3 speedway death of motorcyclist Bob Stevens.  The fatality was the first at Claremont since sidecar rider Gordon Rowland lost his life in 1982.

"I was saddened by this latest accident at Claremont Speedway, which is acknowledged as one of the safest tracks in the world," Mr Moore said.

"Despite the excellent safety record of our speedways, it is imperative that everything possible is done to maintain the highest standards.  We are fortunate in this State to have a very knowledgeable and responsible group of people involved in this sport and their input will be valuable."

The committee would make recommendations aimed at self-regulation of the sport and the on-going promotion of rigorous safety standards.

Public submissions would be accepted until January 14 and should be sent to Mr Neil Costley, Executive Officer, Speedway Review Committee, PO Box 66, Wembley, 6014.
