Public transport best way to get to West Coast/Fremantle match
12/5/95
Transport Minister Eric Charlton says the big spectator turnout expected at Subiaco Oval for the first Perth AFL derby on Sunday makes public transport to and from the ground the best option.
Mr Charlton said additional buses and trains would run on Sunday and Transperth would be offering price concessions to families travelling to the football.
The Day Tripper ticket for example costs $5 and pays for seven people (two adults maximum) to and from the football.
The normal train schedules will be supplemented with more services on every line after 10.00 am and running every seven minutes.
"While the best bet for fans would be to use public transport, Main Roads is anticipating heavy traffic not just for the game, but also because it is Mothers' Day," Mr Charlton said.
"In order to ease the expected traffic congestion, the Kwinana Freeway peak lane will be opened northbound before Sunday's game and southbound after the game to clear traffic from the area. As well, the linked traffic signals in the Leederville and Subiaco areas will be co-ordinated to keep traffic flowing."
Main Roads, police and local government engineers have worked closely to come up with a plan that best handles the anticipated volume of traffic not only for the West Coast Eagles/Fremantle Dockers match, but also other AFL fixtures at Subiaco Oval on a Sunday.
