The State Government has provided a major boost for the Riverton Recreation Centre project today with a grant for $1.3 million.
Announced by Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore and Planning Minister Graham Kierath, the grant paves the way for the complex to open next year.
Mr Kierath said, as the member for Riverton he was particularly pleased the complex had cleared the final hurdle and once completed would be one of the best facilities of its type in the State.
"It is tremendous news. Riverton is going to get the facility it wants and it deserves," Mr Kierath said.
The grant for the recreation complex is the largest awarded as part of the Government's $8.5 million Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.
Mr Moore said the Riverton Recreation Centre was one of 175 projects funded from 318 applications this year with $60 million in projects funded during the past five years.
Mr Kierath said the grant, combined with careful financial planning by the City of Canning, would enable the complex to be debt free when it opened next year.
"When it is built, it will be paid for. There will be no loan required by the council and subsequently no extra burden to the ratepayers," Mr Kierath said.
Expected to open eventually at a cost of $15 million, the Riverton Recreation Complex will feature:

  • a 50 m Olympic-size heated indoor pool;
  • a 25 m heated leisure pool with teaching areas;
  • a"white-knuckle" water slide;
  • a deep pool for SCUBA and rescue training;
  • a hydrotherapy pool for specialist uses such as therapy and recovery;
  • steam sauna and spa areas;
  • gymnasium and fitness areas; and -
  • a community centre with conference rooms.
