Redevelopment of Carey Park (Bunbury) suburb now achieiving results
17/11/95
Bunbury residents will be able to witness for themselves in early 1996 the change in Carey Park with increasing numbers of new homes sprinkled among the old.
Housing Minister Kevin Prince said redevelopment of Homeswest property in the suburb was now achieving results following an extensive planning process.
Mr Prince said the provision of new housing and replacement of old homes through selective demolition and rebuilding would see Homeswest's presence in Carey Park reduced by 22 per cent to 15 per cent.
Already 17 homes had been sold and four sites were being subdivided to provide 20 new homes - 17 for aged units and three family units.
Three homes on reduced lot sizes would also be available for sale with two single residential lots to be created.
The Minister said Homeswest planned to:
+ look at three sites to create six new lots and retain one house on a reduced lot; and -
+ develop eight, two-bedroom units in Hands Avenue as part of a Homeswest community housing co-operative.
Mr Prince said redevelopment work was being carried out with the approval of the Bunbury City Council.
He said the planned sale of 10 Homeswest houses had been so quick that the indications of strong private demand in the area were very good.
New owners of damaged houses bought 'as they were' had already started repairs and renovations which freed Homeswest capital for new homes proposed in the area.
"Homeswest sold the first 10 homes with such success that I approved continuing sales," Mr Prince said.
"Sales will be carried out in accordance with the approved plan and only small numbers will be released at any one time.
"The resulting mix of owner-occupiers and some speculators should enhance the value of land and reflect a keen interest in private ownership."
Mr Prince congratulated Homeswest and its executive director, Greg Joyce, for the revitalisation of aging housing assets and the overall redevelopment plan.
A display of the redevelopment would be on show at Bunbury's Homeswest office with residents to receive newsletters inviting them to view the plans.
