Reid Highway to be extended west from Mitchell Hwy to Marmion Ave
16/12/98
Transport Minister Murray Criddle and City of Stirling Mayor Tony Vallelonga today announced that Reid Highway would be extended west from Mitchell Freeway through Carine to Marmion Avenue.
The highway will be extended as a single carriageway from Mitchell Freeway starting in April 2000 and is expected to take six months to complete.
Mr Criddle said the State Government and the City of Stirling had worked in partnership on the Reid Highway project for some time.
"The City of Stirling has been instrumental in the project being brought forward; specifically they have contributed $3.5 million to the project, which has an estimated total cost of $15 to 18 million," he said.
Mr Vallelonga said the project had been on the City of Stirling's books since 1963 and he was pleased that the Minister had recognised the concerns of residents by deciding to bring the project forward.
"Constructing Reid Highway will bring immediate relief to residents on North Beach Road and adjoining streets in the Karrinyup and Carine areas," Mr Vallelonga said.
"It will also provide a major transport link to the Balcatta industrial area and the domestic and international Perth airports."
Mr Criddle said the single carriageway would incorporate lights at Marmion Avenue, Okley Road north and at the on and off-ramps to Mitchell Freeway.
"Pedestrians and cyclists will be well provided for in the project, with a dual-use path on the northern side of the highway and an overpass at Everingham Street to improve access across Reid Highway," he said.
Other facilities that will be part of the project include noise walls where required, street lighting between Mitchell Freeway and Marmion Avenue and landscaping at the end of the project.
The project will also complement work to widen Mitchell Freeway from two to three lanes between Karrinyup Road and Hepburn Avenue in 1999 and 2000.
