Release of plans to urbanise land near Campbell Barracks, Swanbourne
9/8/94
Plans to urbanise defence force housing land next to the Campbell Barracks in Swanbourne were made available for public comment today by Planning Minister Richard Lewis.
Mr Lewis said a major amendment proposed changing the current 'public purposes' reserve to 'urban' in the Metropolitan Region Scheme to enable redevelopment of the site.
"The Defence Force Housing Authority is keen to redevelop the Commonwealth-owned land and sought the rezoning to comply with State and local government planning requirements," Mr Lewis said.
"The proposal is consistent with the continued use of the land for defence force housing and with the character and pattern of land use and zonings surrounding the site."
Mr Lewis said the City of Nedlands was also preparing a corresponding local scheme amendment to rezone the land to Residential which would allow for further public comment.
The amendment also proposes zoning changes for the Hollywood Hospital site to 'urban' and includes the Mosman Bay Tearooms in the Parks and Recreation reserve.
"The Hollywood Hospital site requires rezoning from the Public Purposes reserve in view of the recent change from public to private ownership," Mr Lewis said.
He said the land to the north and south of the hospital site was already zoned urban in the Metropolitan Region Scheme.
The urban zone included uses such as the privately-owned hospital which is continuing to operate on the site.
The Mosman Bay Tearooms site in Mosman Park is proposed to be transferred from the Waterways Reservation to Parks and Recreation to ensure consistency with the local town planning scheme.
The tearooms site has recently been included within the municipal boundaries of the Town of Mosman Park, which does not include a Waterways Reservation in its town planning scheme.
By changing to the Parks and Recreation reserve, the council will be able to adopt a similar zoning for the tearooms as the Metropolitan Region Scheme.
Public submissions on the Perth and Western Suburbs Omnibus Amendment are invited until November 11.
