Renewed trade push into overseas markets
26/5/93
Deputy Premier Hendy Cowan today signalled a renewed trade push by Western Australian industry into overseas markets.
"The Department of Commerce and Trade will be working closely with local enterprises to market their products and services in a range of ways," Mr Cowan said.
"The promotional program by the department supporting selected industry sectors focuses heavily on Asia, as foreshadowed by the Government.
"But recognition is also given to the opportunities open to Western Australian companies in other key market areas.
"Local enterprises are participating this financial year in major building and construction products and services exhibitions in Singapore and Hong Kong, and the London Wine Trade Fair.
"Local companies have also taken part recently in the 'Building South China '93' international exhibition.
"The Government will support our companies to go to such exhibitions and will provide co-ordination, management, and financial assistance so they can participate in marketing initiatives by important industry sectors."
Mr Cowan said these sectors included building and construction, processed food, wine, environmental management, mining, aerospace and defence, and information technology.
"This work includes direct involvement with relevant industry associations in co-ordinating, managing and funding specific WA exhibitions, involvement in commercially-organised exhibitions and management of targeted, industry-specific missions to researched markets," he said.
"These trade promotions and missions will take place in markets including the Eastern States - still an important and easily accessible market for many WA manufacturers - Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan and China."
However, they would also take place in markets such as:
· Germany, where major international processed food and associated technology and information technology exhibitions are held.
· The US, where some of the most prestigious seafood and wine exhibitions are held.
· Denmark, where a major international environmental management promotion is to be held.
· Chile, where exciting opportunities exist for the State's mining products and services sector.
"Such trade promotions in the past have been very cost effective," Mr Cowan said.
"I want to ensure that as many companies as possible are encouraged to participate in such promotions, which are a logical extension of the services the Department of Commerce and Trade offers to encourage the development of internationally competitive companies."
