Yanchep Inn in the popular national park north of Perth has reopened to the public after a major upgrade.

The Department of Conservation and Land Management undertook a $300,000 improvement program under a conservation plan for the historic inn endorsed by the Heritage Council of Western Australia.

Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes said the work included improvements to bar areas, extensive electrical upgrading, water proofing the building and a completely renovated kitchen area. The exterior of the building also was repainted.

Mrs Edwardes said the inn, which was a particularly popular spot in the 2,800ha park, would provide a full food and bar service. Motel units also had been upgraded to provide accommodation.

"The upgrading of the inn is part of an overall program to improve recreation facilities in the park," she said.

"In the past few years, CALM, with assistance from Federally-funded employment programs, has spent almost $3 million on upgrading roads, essential power and water facilities, the koala display compound, visitor shelters, boardwalks and walkways, viewing platforms, providing access for people with disabilities, new barbecues and the McNess House Information Centre.

"These works have not only improved the amenity of the area, they also have assisted in managing the park's conservation, heritage and cultural values.

"Over the next few months, CALM will begin further work to provide a backpacker shelter near the Ghost House at the northern end of Lake McNess, build a third viewing platform on the Yanjidi Trail and erect more new barbecue facilities.

"CALM also has published a handy, pocket-size guide, Discovering Yanchep National Park, that will enable visitors to learn more about the park's features, particularly its native wildlife.

"The on-going improvement program reflects Yanchep's position as one of the metropolitan area's premier natural attractions and its valuable role in the State's nature-based tourism industry."
