Restoration of the old swimming jetties at Matilda Bay begins
21/1/99
The old swimming jetties at one of Perth's most popular swimming spots on the Swan River are in the process of being restored.
The restoration project stems from a partnership between the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) and the Aboriginal Landcare Group in the northern suburbs.
Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes said with the help and support of Aboriginal Landcare trainees from the Yahnging Aboriginal Corporation and the Nyoongar Community Incorporated, CALM had begun much-needed work to restore the historic jetties as part of the on-going program to improve recreational facilities at Matilda Bay Reserve.
"The jetties were built in the late 1940s to provide people access to deeper water for swimming and recreational purposes," Mrs Edwardes said.
"The jetties have been extremely popular over the years with visitors and many families are still using them today.
"Repairs and restoration work will ensure that the jetties will continue to be a community asset within Matilda Bay for years to come."
CALM Perth District Manager Alan Sands said the restoration project was significantly helped by the involvement of the Aboriginal Landcare Group - a part of CALM's commitment to involving and working with the community.
Mr Sands said the group's involvement in the project had been extremely beneficial not only for CALM but for the trainees as well.
Aboriginal Landcare management group facilitator Annette Garlett said that one of the aims of the Traineeship program was to equip participants with the necessary skills to gain further employment.
Mrs Garlett said the Landcare Traineeship program focused on land management job training incorporating field work and theory.
The Matilda Bay jetty project provided the opportunity for trainees to learn carpentry skills under the supervision of a builder with suitable training expertise.
CALM would continue to be a host employer for the traineeship program for the rest of the year, along with the City of Joondalup.
