Primary Industry Minister Monty House today received the 'National Competition Policy Legislative Review of the Marketing of Potatoes Act 1946' by Agriculture Western Australia.
Mr House said that the review clearly demonstrates that a net public benefit currently arises from the:
- retention of a legislated supply management and delivery intent system of ware potatoes; and -
- retention of the wholesale price setting by Western Potatoes based on grading standards.
"In addition, the report identified the need to initiate the separation of the business and regulatory functions of Western Potatoes," Mr House said.
"It is important that we progress all options to ensure that market opportunities are available and fully realized for the benefit of the WA potato industry."
The recommendations of the review were discussed during a meeting with the Minister, Western Potatoes board member Jim Murphy and Laurie Eldridge, President of the WA Potato Growers' Association.
Mr House said that the potato industry in WA had achieved a $60 million industry based on consumer confidence and effective management principles.
"Consumers recognise potatoes grown in WA are a consistent quality product and shoppers now more than ever have a wider choice of varieties," Mr House said.
"The industry is in a positive position to expand with the potential for export markets being developed."
