A revised and updated Pilbara tourist map was officially launched today by Lands Minister Doug Shave.

"The new StreetSmart Pilbara Touring Map provides a wealth of information and adds an extra dimension for visitors to one of the State's premier tourist destinations," Mr Shave said.

"The Pilbara is a region of rugged coastal beauty and spectacular outback scenery. The map pinpoints enjoyable places to stay such as pastoral stations, one of the burgeoning tourism attractions in the region."

Mr Shave said the Pilbara had much to offer tourists and the new map would help promote its attractions. It covered the coastal area from Carnarvon to Broome and inland as far as Newman.

The map was a joint project between the Department of Land Administration (DOLA), CALM and the Pilbara Development Commission. Main Roads WA and local government authorities also provided input. It cost $6.95 and was available from the Central Mapping Agency at Midland, local tourist bureaus and newsagents.

Town maps were included for Tom Price, Karratha, Port Hedland, South Hedland, Onslow, Dampier, Wickham and Newman and there were notes on tourist attractions, local history and warning notes on outback travel. There was also an enlarged section on Karijini National Park, which was noted for its spectacular mountains, gorges, watercourses and plateaus.

The Minister said DOLA was also upgrading maps on its Internet website which contains highlights of all its touring maps. At present the website covered the Batavia Coast, Blackwood Valley, East Kimberley, Gascoyne, Goldfields, Greater South-West, Pilbara, Mid-West, Rainbow Coast, south coast, south-west corner, West Kimberley, Southern Forest and Rottnest Island.

By clicking on the appropriate links, maps of Perth and Fremantle, as well as country centres, including Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Broome, Geraldton and Albany, were available. A 1:3 million scale map of Western Australia, which could be enlarged to look at the State in detail, was also available.
