Road transport identity Howard Croxon has been appointed chairman of the Remote Area Group which has been set up to advise State Transport Ministers on remote areas transport issues.
Transport Minister Murray Criddle said Mr Croxon was a transport consultant with 25 years' experience in the road transport industry at all levels of operations and management.
"Howard Croxon has served as an industry representative on a range of Western Australian and national industry and government committees and his experience will be invaluable," Mr Criddle said.
The Remote Area Group has been formed to ensure that Australia's remote area heavy haulage remains a world leader in road transport innovation, productivity and safety.
The group will comprise senior representatives of the road transport industry, Government agencies and the National Road Transport Commission.
It will be overseen by a group of State Transport Ministers chaired initially by Mr Criddle.
The Minister said the Remote Area Group replaced the existing Remote Areas Project Group, but would have a broader role.
"This will ensure a greater involvement of remote area State Ministers in finding solutions to the many challenges facing transport in remote areas," he said.
"We believe the Remote Area Group will be a key player in reducing transport costs, delivering greater productivity and improved safety to the road transport industry."
Mr Criddle said Howard Croxon's appointment had the support of Transport Ministers Diana Laidlaw (South Australia), Carl Scully (New South Wales)and Mick Palmer (Northern Territory).
Mr Croxon is also chairman of the Taxi Industry Board, the WA Bicycle Committee and the 'Fix Australia, Fix the Roads' campaign. He is a consultant to the WA Road Transport Association and executive director of the Chamber of Automotive Industries.
