Ron Alexander to head Ministry of Sport and Recreation
2/6/99
Ron Alexander is to head the State Government's top sport and recreation organisation.
Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today announced his appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Sport and Recreation.
Mr Alexander will take up his new position from next Monday.
Mr Moore said that Ron Alexander brought a deep knowledge of sport and recreation to the chief executive officer's position, both as a participant and an administrator.
"He also has a thorough knowledge of the current issues and likely future trends in sport and recreation," Mr Moore said.
"This is a crucial role which has at its heart the health and enjoyment of lifestyle of all Western Australians."
Mr Moore said Mr Alexander had been a teacher, a professional football coach and, for the last 12 years, had worked in a variety of senior management positions in the Ministry of Sport and Recreation.
"In his chosen sport of football, he captained each of the senior clubs he played for - East Perth, Fitzroy and East Fremantle - and he coached East Fremantle, the West Coast Eagles and the WA State team and was named Coach of the Year in 1986," the Minister said.
Mr Moore said that in his previous role as executive director of the Western Australian Sport and Recreation Council,
Mr Alexander had facilitated the development of the Strategic Directions for WA Sport and Recreation (October 1997).
"This Strategic Directions document, which was updated in April, is the blueprint for the future of sport and recreation in WA and I can think of no-one better qualified than Ron Alexander to implement its recommendations," Mr Moore said.
He said Mr Alexander had been a member of Government taskforces such as the WA Olympic Taskforce and the Working Party on Physical Education and Sport in WA schools.
He also had been a member of the WA Institute of Sport and was currently a member of the WA Eye Foundation Ethics Committee, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a board member of the Fremantle Football Club.
