Industrial Relations Minister Graham Kierath has praised the 'common sense' decision of the Industrial Relations Commission which ruled yesterday that unionists who walked off a building site last week because of hot weather the previous day should not be paid.

"This was an outrageous example of restrictive work practices and it is pleasing that Industrial Relations Commissioner Tony Beech apparently agrees," Mr Kierath said.

"These workers were not even aware that it was too uncomfortable to work until they learnt later that the temperature momentarily got above 37.5C.

"To down tools the following day makes a mockery of why the rule was introduced."

Commissioner Beech has recommended against paying the Construction, Mining, Energy, Timberyards, Sawmills and Woodworkers' Union members for the time lost.
