About 350 sporting and other non-profit clubs saved more than $600,000 in land tax in the financial year just ended.

Finance Minister Max Evans said that the savings had resulted from amendments the State Government had made to the Land Tax Assessment Act in September last year.

Mr Evans said that new clubs, or existing clubs which had acquired new land or which had changed the use of some of their land, should ensure that they gained the benefit from the amendments in the new financial year.

Under the Government's amendments sporting clubs and other non-profit associations were exempted from land tax on land used for club purposes.

They were still required to pay tax on land used to provide services in competition with the private sector and land not used for club purposes.

It was therefore important for clubs to check their entitlements where the use of land had been changed.

Clubs unsure of their position could call the Commissioner of State Taxation's land tax enquiries section on 320 0500.
