Enthusiastic community support has been one of the main reasons behind the successful start to the school year for one of WA's newest schools, Atwell Primary School.

Education Minister Colin Barnett today praised the whole school community for their role in developing the school which began this year and now has more than 340 students from kindergarten to year seven.

Mr Barnett today officially opened the $3.5 million school which includes 12 general teaching areas, a double pre-primary unit, library/resource centre, covered assembly area and sporting facilities. The school also has fibre optic cabling throughout to give students access to the latest computer and information technology.

"I am delighted at how Atwell Primary School has progressed since it was announced last year and commend students, staff and parents on the contributions they are making to the school," Mr Barnett said.

Mr Barnett recalled the enthusiasm of the community and the local Members of Parliament, Monica Holmes and Derrick Tomlinson, in their discussions with himself and the Education Department to have the school built in time for the current school year, at least a year in advance of when it was originally scheduled to be built.

In recognition of these efforts, the Minister presented the school with an aquarium and a fish. He also announced some other good news for the school.

"In line with the expected increase in enrolments there is a need for additional early childhood facilities from next year.

"I am pleased to announce the I support the innovative suggestion from principal Phil Mort that the Education Department investigates the development of an early childhood facility similar to the "school in houses" project to provide two extra early childhood teaching areas from next year," Mr Barnett said.

Mr Barnett said it was encouraging to see Atwell Primary School being supported by everyone involved and congratulated students, staff and parents on its official opening.
