The flora and fauna of the Kimberley will come under the spotlight in the next few weeks as scientists involved in environmental studies on stage two of the Ord River project assemble in Kununurra.

The team of more than 10 scientists has been put together by Sinclair Knight Merz, the company which won a $350,000 contract to undertake a comprehensive environmental study on behalf of the Department of Resources Development.

The scientists will examine the potential environmental impacts of the proposed stage two development, including surveys of the region's flora and fauna.

Resources Development Minister Colin Barnett and Primary Industry Minister Monty House said the scientists would draw information from past surveys in the region to add to the information they would gather during the next few weeks.

"The scientists will also make use of local knowledge, consulting with communities in the region who have a strong understanding of the Kimberley's environment and its ecology through farming, recreation and traditional uses," Mr House said.

"The consultants also recently saw some data which was collected by students at Kununurra District High School and St Joseph's Primary School under the Ribbons of Blue project, which examines the water quality in irrigation supply channels and drains in the area," Mr Barnett said.

"The information has the potential to be valuable to the research that will be conducted in the coming weeks."

The Ministers said the complete environmental study report was expected to be available early next year.
