Secondary school students with intellectual disabilities have been rewarded for their participation in a WorkSafe program available over the Internet.
Labour Relations Minister Cheryl Edwardes today presented WorkSafe Smart Move Certificates of Participation to seven students from the Education Support Centre at Newton Moore High School.
The Minister presented the awards at the opening of the South-West Region's WorkSafe Week Expo and seminars at the Lord Forrest Hotel, Bunbury.
Mrs Edwardes said the WorkSafe Smart Move package was an Internet resource package for secondary school students undertaking work experience or work placement.
"Since the Worksafe Smart Move package was launched in 1996, more than 34,000 Western Australian secondary school students have achieved their WorkSafe Smart Move Certificates," she said.
"Students can show their certificate to prospective employers to prove that they have a basic knowledge of occupational safety and health.
"Students study information, and if they can they answer 12 out of 16 multiple choice questions correctly, they can print out their certificates."
Mrs Edwardes said that students with intellectual disabilities could earn a special Certificate of Participation to demonstrate their knowledge of the basics of occupational safety and health.
"The students here today have all been taken through the WorkSafe Smart Move information by their education support teachers and have been encouraged to answer as many questions as they can," she said.
"They have all worked hard to earn this recognition of their excellent efforts."
Mrs Edwardes also thanked everyone participating in WorkSafe Week, particularly exhibitors at the Expo and those who attended the information sessions and workshops.
