Tom Price now has a senior high school.

Education Minister Norman Moore today announced that the town's only secondary school had been upgraded from high school to senior high school status.

"The change to senior high school status recognises the delivery of a first-class educational service to the community," Mr Moore said.

"I am committed to ensure that children living in the more remote parts of Western Australia receive the same range of quality educational opportunities as students in the metropolitan area."

Mr Moore said the school offered its students a wide range of subjects and they also had access to additional subjects through Distance Education.

He said the change from high school to senior high school would not immediately involve additional staff or facilities, but both would be provided as the school grew.

The school currently had 170 students and numbers were expected to grow as a result of the increased primary school enrolments currently being experienced.

"Tom Price Senior High School will offer families an excellent alternative to sending their children away to city schools," Mr Moore said.

"Having taught at the school in the early 70s, I am personally delighted the high school has achieved this senior high school status."
