Signing of the City of Albany - Aboriginal People's Accord
30/11/99
The City of Albany and representatives of the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community today signed an historic agreement to promote a greater understanding of the history and culture of the Nyoongar people.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Aboriginal Affairs Minister
Dr Kim Hames, who congratulated all signatories for their courage and foresight.
"The signing today of the City of Albany - Aboriginal People's Accord, an agreement between the City of Albany, the people of Albany, and the Aboriginal community, represents a very important step forward in the process of reconciliation," he said.
"The Accord acknowledges the spiritual and cultural links of the Nyoongar people to this land.
"It also recognises the impact of European settlement on the Nyoongar people's culture and customs.
"In drawing up this agreement, all parties have shown their desire to promote a greater understanding of the history and culture of the Nyoongar people, the original inhabitants of this area.
"At the same time they have shown they are willing to move forward, to work together to build a partnership based upon mutual respect, co-operation and trust.
"I believe this Accord will greatly assist the entire community of Albany - Aboriginal and non Aboriginal alike - along the road to reconciliation."
The Accord is designed to serve as a pragmatic working document, which establishes a formal relationship between the City of Albany and the local Aboriginal community.
The document acknowledges the past, recognises the present, and provides a plan for the future.
