Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today praised Skywest Airlines for its efforts in supporting sport and recreation in Western Australia.
"Sport in our country areas is very lucky to have the on-going support of Skywest Airlines," Mr Moore said.
He was speaking at a breakfast held at Perth Airport to thank Skywest Airlines for its Sport Development Program.
The Minister also praised Skywest for its support of new scheme, the Skywest Country Officials Scholarship, which helped country-based officials develop their skills.
This new element to Skywest's support, launched earlier this year in Geraldton, completed the Skywest Sport Development.
"Since 1995, Skywest has provided a valuable travel sponsorship that has played a significant role in developing sport in regional Western Australia," he said.
"The current Skywest sponsorship covers destinations such as Carnarvon, Exmouth, Geraldton, Derby, Albany and Esperance and overall 1000 people have reaped the benefits of the program this past year."
Mr Moore also highlighted specific achievements of the program in the past year.
These included:
- a dressage and training session for 25 people in Esperance;
- specialist coaching clinics for 15 harness riders in Albany;
- a dozen stewards accredited for go-karting in Esperance; and -
- athletes receiving special coaching in Geraldton.
"These are real benefits reaching right into the regional community to help build the sporting infrastructure required for people of all levels and abilities to enjoy sport and recreation," Mr Moore said.
