Stage Two of a program designed to create awareness of housing issues among secondary school students was launched by Housing Minister Kevin Prince during a ceremony at the West Perth headquarters of the Master Builders Association today.

Mr Prince said the resource kit 'Housing Patterns in Perth', the second stage of the MBA's Housing Awareness Program, provided an insight into the social, economic and cultural influences which had shaped Perth's overall growth and development, as well as those which had shaped individual homes.

"This kit will provide an invaluable resource for secondary students, and it also serves the purpose of driving home early to them the importance of housing to our day-to-day lives," Mr Prince said.

"The kit covers the considerable economic influence of housing, its role in underpinning so much economic activity and in creating a ripple effect of employment and business opportunities.

"It also examines how housing patterns have evolved, the distribution of housing, and the relationship between the community's housing and environmental needs.

"Throughout the package there are plenty of specific examples and case studies to illustrate the points under discussion, and all in all it is an extremely worthwhile follow up to Stage One of the Housing Awareness Program."

Stage One of the program involved a 'Design for the Future' competition, in which secondary school students were asked to design a housing estate of the future with special focus on smaller lot development and urban infill.

"Stage One proved to be a great success in generating awareness of housing issues among secondary school students, and I am sure 'Housing Patterns in Perth' will now take its place in secondary schools as the most up to date and relevant resource on housing issues in Perth," Mr Prince said.

The Housing Awareness Program is supported by grants of $20,000 each from Homeswest and the Department of Planning and Urban Development.
