Start of construction of Murdoch University's Rockingham Campus
22/6/96
Education entered a new era in the south-west metropolitan region today with the start of construction of Murdoch University's $18.8 million Rockingham Campus.
Speaking at the 'Breaking of the Ground Ceremony', Education Minister Colin Barnett said the $11.5 million stage one of the campus would provide general teaching areas, and arts/commercial block and engineering teaching and research facilities.
"Planning is under way for the second part of the stage which will include a library jointly funded by the City of Rockingham," Mr Barnett said.
"The campus will offer a range of tertiary award courses to serve the needs of students and local industry, from TAFE certificates to university degrees."
Murdoch University is already offering a general arts degree using TAFE facilities, while engineering courses will begin in the new building next year.
"Murdoch University and TAFE will work closely with the community, industry and business in the region to ensure that the Rockingham campus provides an effective and accessible service," Mr Barnett said.
He said the efficiencies of using one campus to service both the university and TAFE sector opened up additional opportunities for students to move freely between both.
Credit transfer arrangements would allow student movement between TAFE and Murdoch courses.
Located on 25 hectares adjacent to Rockingham TAFE, the campus will be linked electronically to the main Murdoch campus.
Mr Barnett said the Rockingham campus was a major boost to post-compulsory education in the region and he was proud to be associated with such an innovative project.
