Work has begun on repainting the white lines on many of Western Australia's rural roads.

Transport Minister Eric Charlton said two Main Roads repainting contracts had been let for a total of 25,000 kilometres of road lines.

The contract, worth $875,000, was awarded to Superlux Paint Company Pty Ltd.

Mr Charlton said the contracts covered about 80 per cent of the white lines on WA's rural road network.

"Nearly 40 per cent of the State's rural roads are repainted annually, and the remainder of the non-metropolitan roads every two years," he said.

"The visibility of white lines as edge lines and centre lines on the roads is an important aspect of road safety.

"The paint is blended with glass beads to provide reflection at night and improve driver awareness."

Repainting in the South-West will be completed in 14 weeks and work in other areas of the State will take 26 weeks.
