State Government's new $23 million secondary campus will be called Shenton College

The State Government's new state-of-the-art $23 million secondary campus in the western suburbs will be called Shenton College, in accordance with the wishes of the school community.
Education Minister Colin Barnett announced today that he had endorsed the popular choice of students and parents to name the school after its location in Shenton Park and a distinguished pioneering family of the State.
"I am very pleased with the community's choice and was more than happy to endorse it when I heard they had chosen Shenton College," Mr Barnett said.
"It not only reflects the college's geography but also an association with an eminent family in Western Australia's history and the suburb itself.
"Descendants of the Shenton family first arrived in Perth the late 1820s and are associated with historic landmarks, the mining and pastoral industries of the Mid-West and State Parliament, with Sir George Shenton, the former owner of Shenton House, President of the Legislative Council from October 1892 until May 1906."
The school community gave its preference to Shenton College ahead of Mary Durack College and Lemnos College.
The development of the new campus has moved ahead steadily since first being announced mid last year after local area education planning consultation with school communities in the western suburbs.
Architectural plans for the campus were unveiled in March and construction will begin later this month ready for the 2001 school year.
The Minister also announced today that Cooper and Oxley Builders would construct Shenton College.
"We're still on track for the school to open in less than 18 months," Mr Barnett said.
"Making a decision about the college's name will now allow the Hollywood and Swanbourne school communities to continue working on further aspects of the school's identity such as developing the school crest.
"The Implementation committee has already endorsed the very attractive shades of navy blue and bottle green with white and gold trim for the school colours.
"It has also chosen a great motto - 'Excellence through self and community' - and the colours and motto might also be incorporated into the crest."
Mr Barnett said the school communities were also progressing well with artwork for the college. Artworks are incorporated into every new high school as part of the State Government's Percent for Art project.
"Five exciting major works have been commissioned for Shenton College," the Minister said.
"Three of them will be finalised in workshops with students from both Swanbourne and Hollywood high schools.
"Coincidentally, two of the artists are former Hollywood students.
"There will be a sculpture which will form the centrepiece of the school, as well as a lifesize bronze silhouette for the promenade and a pavement artwork linking the middle and senior schools.
"The other two pieces will be located in the library and canteen."
Mr Barnett said Hollywood and Swanbourne students would experience a continuity of staff at the new school.
"Pauline Coghlan has been appointed to the principal's position, Rob Schock will be deputy principal of the senior school and Anna Kristancic will be deputy principal of the middle school," he said.
Mr Barnett said learning team co-ordinators from Swanbourne and Hollywood had also been appointed to both the senior and middle schools.
The school will open with up to 480 middle school students and 500 senior school students.
