State Government provides $13 million for 'black spot' road projects
9/1/01
Transport Minister Murray Criddle has released a list of more that 230 road trouble spots and potentially hazardous locations around Western Australia that will be eliminated by July this year under State Government's annual $13 million Black Spot Program.
In addition to the Government's $13 million, a further $3.5 million will be contributed by various local government authorities around WA to support safety projects on local roads.
Mr Criddle said State Government funding for the elimination of 'black spots' over the next four years would be $52 million ($13 million a year).
"We hope that local government authorities can continue their contributions at the current level of $3.5 million, which would boost overall spending on 'black spots' to $65 million over the next four years," he said.
The Minister said that under the big road safety initiative, half the 'black spot' money would be spent on projects in country WA and the remainder in the metropolitan area.
"This spending is part of the State Government's major assault on the road toll," he said.
"The WA Regional Road Groups, which played a crucial role in identifying the projects, are currently notifying local government councils of the works to be funded in 2000-2001.
"I'm pleased that the works will deal with a wide range of safety issues and cater for a variety of road users which local governments are committed to completing by July this year."
The road safety initiative includes 116 'black spot' projects on local government roads in rural WA and a further 76 local road projects in metropolitan Perth. An additional 41 projects are on State highways and other major roads.
Mr Criddle said one of the key State road initiatives was the installation of advanced flashing amber warning signals at various four-way intersections on the major traffic routes of Roe, Reid and Tonkin Highways, Ennis Avenue, Patterson, Rockingham and Armadale Roads.
He said the WA Municipal Association, Main Roads WA, and the Road Safety Council had input in the selection of the 'black spot' program.
The Road Safety Council comprised representatives from the WA Police, the RAC, Health Department, Education Ministry, local government and the Department of Transport.
"I'm grateful to everybody who has had input in this major road safety initiative which I believe will be enthusiastically embraced by communities right around Western Australia," Mr Criddle said.
"It is an on-going program that will make our entire road network safer and more efficient."
A key part of the program will be the installation of flashing amber warning signal at:
Tonkin Highway - Leach Highway $ 15,000
