An existing bus lane in Jaggs Way, Kardinya, will remain but there will be an effort to prevent the illegal use of the roadway by vehicles other than Transperth buses.

Transport Minister Eric Charlton said he had reviewed the issue and would take action to ensure safety to residents in Jaggs Way.

"This issue has been ongoing for at least three years, and I think that is long enough," Mr Charlton said.

"The bus lane links Jaggs Way with Harvey Crescent and both Transperth and the Melville City Council believe it is the most practical option.

"To relocate it to another area, such as south of Harvey Crescent between Weatherburn Way and Le Souef Drive, would only upset a new group of residents.  It would not resolve the problem.

"At the same time, I acknowledge that the constant use of the bus lane by private and commercial vehicles is a cause of anxiety for residents.  What we have to do is come up with a way of limiting the use of the bus lane."

Mr Charlton said he had asked Transperth to work with the council and police to install appropriate devices to stop vehicles other than public buses from using the route.

He said the options included the construction of a 'car trap' and electronic camera surveillance.

In addition, the situation would be monitored continually in search of a solution that would meet the needs of all residents in Kardinya.
