Westrail has appointed engineering consultants CMPS and F Pty Ltd to investigate the feasibility of relocating Bunbury railway station back into the city's central business district.

Transport Minister Eric Charlton said growing support for the concept from the Bunbury City Council and the local community, had prompted the Government's decision to call a study.

"There is a growing belief that relocation of the station closer to the centre of Bunbury will encourage more tourists into the city on the Australind train service," Mr Charlton said.

The Bunbury terminal was moved from the CBD to Forrest Avenue in Wollaston in the mid 1980s.

The study will look at two possible relocation sites - on or near the junction of Clifton and Victoria Streets just north of the Bunbury CBD, and on or near Stirling and Blair Streets to the south of the CBD.

The study will also:

·         investigate other possible locations and assessment of the existing location;

·         examine planning issues related to alternative station sites;

·         investigate possible business development opportunities for Westrail;

·         assess the cost of providing infrastructure such as buildings, track and signalling.
