A State Government program to upgrade fire fighting equipment in rural Western Australia took a step forward today with the Bush Fires Board calling for submissions for grants.

Emergency Services Minister Bob Wiese said the Government had allocated $2.4 million in this year's State Budget for the replacement of fire fighting equipment in high-risk areas and for an improved communication networks.

"These grants are in line with the Government's commitment to funding for volunteer bush fire brigades through local government authorities over the next three years," Mr Wiese said.

The Minister said grants would be made for the purchase of fire appliances and equipment in high-risk areas.

These included fast attack vehicles, one, two and three thousand litre 4WD vehicles, communications equipment, fire brigade stations and personal protective clothing.

Local government authorities and brigades would be required to match the State Government on an average 50/50 basis.

"Applications will be assessed on demonstrated need and grant applications forms are available from all Bush Fires Board regional offices," the Minister said.

Mr Wiese said grants would only be made for items which had been approved by the Bush Fires Board to ensure a minimum standard of fire cover throughout the State.

Any council requiring assistance in applying for a grant should contact their Bush Fires Board regional office.
