Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today threw his support behind the Geraldton Greenough Aquatic and Leisure Centre Appeal.

Speaking at a function in Geraldton to outline the concept plans for the proposed Geraldton Greenough Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Mr Moore said the facility was a very sound community investment.

"I doubt if there are any more worthy projects than the provision of a facility that will enhance the well-being of the community and contribute towards ensuring that the 50,000 or so people of this region will remain healthier and have a better quality of life," he said.

The State Government has committed $1million to the project through the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund.  The remaining funding will be raised by the local community in the Geraldton and Greenough districts.

Mr Moore said the comprehensive feasibility study and thorough community consultation at the planning phase of the facility had played a big part in the Government's decision to provide such substantial funding.

"The community cannot afford to have 'white elephants' when it comes to expensive sporting and recreation facilities that are badly planned, under-utilised, mismanaged, or all three," he said.

"Pleasingly, communities are striving to ensure that 'white elephants' are an endangered species when it comes to sporting facilities in Western Australia through a more thorough and professional approach at the concept phase.

"Those involved in the Geraldton Greenough facility submitted a planning and project justification of a very high standard and given the support at local level, the Government was pleased to provide funding.

"It is now up to the local community to provide the balance and I am confident they will do this."
