Support sought for cttee on creation of bushland park reserve in Australind
22/5/97
Lands Minister Doug Shave has sought Harvey Shire support for the establishment of an advisory committee on the creation of a bushland park reserve in Australind.
Mr Shave said the Australind Park Investigative Advisory Committee would examine and make recommendations on the proposal to put aside a significant portion of bushland adjoining the Bunbury Golf Course.
The land extends from the Old Coast Road right through to the Collie River.
"This is a golden opportunity to preserve a significant portion of this natural bushland in the midst of a residential area," Mr Shave said.
"The ministerial committee will examine options for a bushland reserve and associated recreational purposes.
"Complementary land uses will also be considered, including the option of an open air amphitheatre.
"To ensure the local community is properly represented in the planning process, the shire has been invited to nominate two councillors, and the committee will be chaired by Mitchell MLA, Dan Sullivan."
Mr Sullivan said the parkland proposal had tremendous community support.
"The idea of a bushland park has been around for years, but people are showing a particularly strong interest now that something positive is happening," he said.
"It is important that everyone interested in this proposal should have their say to ensure the bushland park reserve meets community expectations."
The ministerial committee brings together a number of organisations with interests in the land under consideration.
The committee is required to provide options and advise on future use of the area and recommend a long term management plan.
