TLC commended on journey insurance for union members
21/4/94
Labour Relations Minister Graham Kierath has congratulated the Trades and Labor Council for arranging journey insurance for union members.
"I am pleased to see that the union movement is seeking to provide a very real benefit to its members," Mr Kierath said.
"This response to a perceived need is, in my opinion, the true role for any union, and the good work should be continued."
Mr Kierath said that when unions stopped playing political power games and concentrated on looking after the genuine interests of members then employers, employees and unions would have a more effective and constructive relationship.
The Minister added that the idea of workers being covered by journey insurance was an interesting and innovative idea.
"My only concern with journey claims was that they did not belong in workers' compensation, as the employer had no control over the situation," he said.
"However, any person who wished to take out this sort of insurance for themself has my support."
