Teachers' Union urged to accept IRC's ruling on lifting of bans
9/6/95
Education Minister Norman Moore today appealed to the State School Teachers' Union to accept the State Industrial Relations Commission's ruling and lift bans on extra-curricula activities.
Mr Moore pledged to start negotiating a significant salary increase with the union the moment the bans were lifted.
"The union's State Council meeting this weekend has the capacity to lift the bans which are affecting out-of-class activities in our schools," Mr Moore said.
"The Industrial Commission has ordered the union to lift the bans by Tuesday, June 13, so that enterprise bargaining can start the following day.
"It is the second time the commission has ordered the union to lift the ban."
"The Government has accepted the Commission's rulings, which involve a 2½ per cent interim pay increase, and is anxious to begin negotiations with the union."
Mr Moore said the union had everything to gain and nothing to lose by lifting the bans and entering negotiations.
"Teachers may be pleasantly surprised at what the Government has to offer," he said.
