Tender for connecting Toodyay homes to reticulated sewerage awarded
5/6/99
Toodyay residents can look forward to the convenience of connecting to reticulated sewerage this year.
Water Resources Minister Dr Kim Hames said today the tender had been awarded for the project and site work had begun.
Dr Hames said 96 privately owned properties would be able to connect to reticulated sewerage when the project was completed around October.
"Residents will be provided with full details and notified of the construction schedule," he said.
"Once connections are available, I urge householders to connect up to the system as soon as possible.
"Apart from the savings in maintenance costs, there are major benefits to public health and the environment by converting septic tanks to reticulated sewerage.
"Septic tanks and leach drains can allow nutrient-rich liquid to find its way into our precious groundwater. These nutrients boost algae growth in rivers, lakes and wetlands with deadly effects on our bird and fish life."
Dr Hames said the contract for the work had been awarded to G & B Drainage who had extensive experience in this type of work. The project involved approximately 2,700m of reticulated sewer.
The area to be sewered was bounded by Avon River, Goomalling-Toodyay Road and the Railway Line.
Dr Hames said the project was part of the State Government's $800 million Infill Sewerage Program to provide sewerage connections to most of the previously unsewered areas of the State over a 10-year period.
The Water Corporation and G & B Drainage would keep all residents fully informed at every stage of the project and any inconvenience caused by excavations would be minimised.
The manager for the Toodyay infill sewerage project is Lloyd Leith, who may be contacted for further information on 9420 3641.
