Tenders are soon to be called for the construction of the new $3.6 million Ranford Primary School in Orkney Crescent, Ranford.

Education Minister Colin Barnett said today that the new school would be ready for occupation by 250 students from pre-primary to year seven and staff at the start of the 1999 school year.

The new school would have all the facilities expected in a primary school at the threshold of the 21st century. Fibre optic cabling would be provided throughout the school, with the capability of linking computer networks and the Internet to every classroom.

"The new school will have 12 classrooms, two pre-primary classrooms, an administration area, a library/resource centre, an art/craft room, a music room, covered assembly area and canteen," Mr Barnett said.

The Minister said the school would also have strong links with its local community from the beginning.

"Following the success of a joint project with the City of Canning at Canning Vale Primary School, which provided community oval and parking facilities, similar expanded plans were put into place for the new Ranford school," he said.

"A reticulated oval and four multi-purpose hard courts and parking bays for 70 cars will be jointly provided. The city council will also provide changerooms and a meeting room that will be available for school use."

Mr Barnett congratulated the City of Canning for its cooperation and contribution to a very worthwhile community facility.

The Education Department is currently advertising for a principal for the new school.
